800-meter runner Joaquim Cruz used to hold his breath in the last 50 meters of every track interval in certain sessions.
william reed ran 46.84 in 85 or 86 at bu indoor as a hs sr and reportedly held his breath the whole race. at the time it was hs 400 m indoor record. also of note the overpass above the turnoff for bu on mem drive in cambridge is william reid overpass. coincidence, i think not....i 'll take infrastructure over t&fn.

I just did one of these a couple of weeks ago. Only difference was that each leg was a 5k around a lake, not just a mile. Fortunately I knew I would have all of August off from racing. Ended up doing about 32 miles total with about 2 hours rest between each leg.
It was a lot of fun, really. Very hard but I never really died. And it definitely made me stronger.
Still, I'm glad I didn't try to do this while still in college. I never would have made it.
Actually, we were in High School. And without a clue as to what can happen over distance and time. What you did sounds like fun- 5K legs sounds more humane, actually, compared to a hard mile every 40 minutes or so. I did recover well enough a year later to run a marathon debut of 2:52, so maybe it DID help out, over the long term (the marathon was WAYYY easier).
