It's certainly is an issue
Let's just talk money. Do you know how hard it is to get lodging in Eugene? I'm sure some parents have already booked travel. One top coach texted me, "We've spent a lot of money on lodging that we'll now have to change."
The schedule now is very close to the Olympic schedule which I think is good as if you are going to double, people should qualify in the same order. If tha'ts the reason - and again, why didn't they explain the reasoning in the press release - then I'd have been in support of it being in that order initially but really wish the mistake had never been made to get it wrong.
This has a HUGE IMPACT on America's #1 distrance runner Shelby Houlihan. Before at the Trials, she could easily do the 1500/5000 double as the 1500 was scheduled for days 1, 2, 4 and the 5000 for days 7 and 10. Now she'd have to run the 5k and 1500 prelims on day 1, then the 1500 semi on day 2, the 5k final on day 3 and 1500 final on day 4.
One can argue that she wasn't likely to double at the Olympics. Yes, but she most certainly would have liked to double at the Trials in case you get tripped or something. Plus This just cost her tens of thousands of dollars in terms of prize money/bonuses.
It definitely changes people's Olympic chances as well. If someone like Molly Huddle was only going to run the 10,000 at the Trials, this could help her. . Some of the other 10k hopefuls - are likely to try out in the 5000 first now. There, they either make the team or tire themselves out. Both of which help her in the 10,000. Then again, if she was planning on trying both the 5 and the 10, this makes it a real tough decision for her.
I think the pure 5000 women don't like this as they'd like to see the 10,000 types get tired out.
Ben True probably hates this change. Before, he got to try out for his favorite event first - 5k, then try the 10k. Now it's the opposite.
It's pretty hard to analyze but I think it's disappointing that they are only realizing this now.
USATF employees, I know someone will be reading this. You need to up the size of the 1500 fields. Having 30 people for 3 rounds is a disgrace. You shouldn't reduce the 1500 fields from 30 to 24 in round 1. There should be at least 36 entrants, and probably 45 to 48. More athletes get to realize an Olympic Trials dream and its' more entertaining for the fans.
