“'El galgo de Zamáns' was one of the most important figures in the history of athletics in Galicia.
The athlete Alejandro Gómez Cabral, a native of the Vigo parish of Zamáns, has died this Sunday at 53 years of age after months diagnosed with a brain tumor.
“This has been reported by the family and collected by several sports federations, which have expressed their regret through social networks.
Alejandro Gómez Cabral was champion of Spain in different athletic disciplines, in which he achieved various records, and participated in the Olympic Games in Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996.
In addition, in recent years he dedicated himself to 'mushing' - dog sled races - a discipline in which he managed to be champion of Spain and participate in international competitions on behalf of his country.
The Galician Federation of Winter Sports (FGDI), to which he belonged, has conveyed its "most sincere condolences" to the family and friends of Gómez Cabral.
For its part, the Galician Athletics Federation dresses up in a fight to "lose a historical reference, a brave man who knew how to compete, like few others, in mud, synthetic and asphalt".
"His sports legacy places him among the chosen ones in world athletics and among the greatest Spanish athletes of all time," adds the Federation.
Also the Minister of Culture and Sports, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, expresses his regret through his Twitter account: "My condolences to his family and friends."
For his part, the president of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, says he receives "with sadness" the news of the death of Alejandro Gómez Cabral and remembers his nickname: 'the galgo de Zamáns'.
"A legend of Galician and Spanish sports, he received our admiration both for his many successes in athletics and for his courage and example in life," Feijóo highlights in a tweet.”
