High praise from 1500m specialist Nick Willis.

My first thought about Hocker running 2:49 was, "That's faster than Willis' 2:50 @ Penn when he was 20".
He is def talented.

Willis ran 2:49 in that race but yeah Hocker ran faster.
Hocker handed off in 2nd. Not much love for the leader. Gomez looks like he could run 3:34.

Agreed. It has been odd to see this happen. Maybe the obsession and bias for the Oregon crew?
Gomez has a best of 3:54 for 1500 at current. A transfer to IA State/Martin Smith has done wonders. He has the stride, form, and build of a 3:34 guy.
I think coming back the next day with a 7:46 with a 4:03 last 1600 is what’s grabbing people’s attention

No, even before the 3k it seemed most posters were inclined to simply gloss over the guy they’d never heard of named Gomez and say “Wow, Hocker!—who can’t he beat??”

That is not how I read the thread on the DMR
https://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=10410556&page=1Like myself, many at first didn't realize from the headlines that Hocker had been 2nd in the 1200m leg. I there predicted 3:35 or better for Hocker this year. Then I saw the race and Gomez was even more impressive and looked like a higher ceiling prospect.
at 800/1500m, that is. Hocker proved with the 7:46 that he's going to be very good at 3k/5k.

Why would you comment on a race that you didn’t see and only read headlines about?
I’m honestly asking.

Man he's really thriving now that his dad can't hover around him all the time.
Gomez does remind me of a young Bryce Hoppel. I think he can win the NCAA 800 based off how well he closed in that 1200m. I think he’s a contender to make the 800m Olympic team.
Hocker is more hyped up I think because he’s 19 years old and has excellent range from 800-5k. He has 4 years of outdoor eligibility but I doubt he will use it all.
