TLDR on bottom.
Former triathlete/hobby jogger Taggart VanEtten has bad some solid amateur triathlon (half iron distance) results and ran a 2:37 marathon off of tri-training. He was putting in about 20-25 mpw of running when he went 2:37 and decided to switch focus to running. His ultimate dream was/is a 2024 Marathon OTQ.
To keep himself focused during COVID, he decided to pursue crazy high mileage and chase the American record for 100 miles on trail (12:08 by Zach Bitter). Although Taggart ultimately came up short, he did run an astonishing 12:13 in his ultramarathon debut.
This led to him being on many podcasts where he outlined a typical training week:
Monday - Friday: 16 miles AM, 8 miles PM
Saturday: “Really f***ing long” in Taggart’s own words (30-60 miles)
Sunday: A marathon in sub-3 hrs
This comes out to 176.2 - 206.2 in a given week. Although Taggart and I have the same job (teacher and coach) and I am arguably “more talented” than him based on my 15:00ish 5k PR and mid 2:20s ‘thin, I do not have time for that much mileage due to having a wife and 2 kids. However, this regiment is appealing to me. I like easy running, I like doubles, and I think back to back long days on the weekend is perfect for my schedule.
So, if I did exactly half of Taggart’s schedule would I be able to hold his 100 pace for half the distance?
TLDR version - some slow poke ran a ton and put up a crazy 100 mile result (12:13). This got me thinking: could I cut his schedule in half and get near 6 hours flat for 50 miles? Here is what that would look like:
Monday - Friday: 8 AM, 4 PM
Saturday: 15-30 miles
Sunday: Half-Marathon on rolling hills somewhere in the 1:2X range.
