I'm not a new runner, coming up 8yrs now, and in that time I've done dozens of Halfs and 10ks, and also 3x marathons. My marathon PB is 2:54, and maybe a bit weak in comparison to my HM 1:19.
The problem I've had is that long runs always seem to batter me more than I feel they should. It isn't the run itself, more how I feel afterwards. Almost always have a bad headache, feel drained, dehydrated (no matter what I do), and just generally feel crap.
I've played around with water stops, hydrating extra before, eating as soon as the run is over, drinking loads after, drinking little and often after. I've also tried gels in the past, but nothing seems to help. I still feel just as bad afterwards. I also eat lunch within an hour of finishing the run.
I'm not talking just stupidly long runs or hard runs either - I feel like this after a 2hr run at easy pace, which can be 15-16 miles depending on the day. Today I went 16 at 7:45 pace and Ive felt run down and headachey all day.
I never have this feeling after workouts either. Only the long runs (whether easy or hard).
A 90 min run feels fine, no problems at all. But 2hrs really causes me problems. I feel like this is a bit odd, as I run 60-70mpw now and I've done hundreds of such long runs over the years (always feeling bad afterwards); so why haven't I adapted to them? Surely it isn't normal to feel this bad after an easy pace 2hr run?
Could it be something in my physiology that's geared to 10k/HM and nothing further?
Interested to hear anyone's thoughts or experiences, as it is getting to the point when I'm tempted to call marathons off altogether - just isn't worth feeling like crap every Saturday afternoon to get in a 16-20 mile run. I seem to be able to run a good half off minimal long runs, my PB was off no more than 12-13 miles IIRC, so dropping the long run day and doing a big quality session up to 90mins looks infinitely more appealing.
