Stealing Flagpole's thunder, but actually have a question. Three weeks and 2 days til Boston. I had planned on my last 20 (21 actually) miler being last Sat. (4 weeks out). I think I will do a 20 closing hard the last 4 tomorrow. I remember last marathon doing last 20 4 weeks out and by the time marathon day came, it felt like it had been too long (may have just been mental).
What's your take on last 20 miler , 3 or 4 weeks out?
Since I've only run one marathon and I did it on a whim, I'm curious to hear what different people think about how soon to do the last long run. I've been given some real good advice from several different people, and most say 4 weeks out for the last long run.
20? Why so short, I used to do 30!
I've always run the last 20 + run 4 weeks out but I'll usually run one more of 12 - 14
Depends on whether or not you have been consistently hitting 100 per week.
Try 3 weeks out, I think you might be surprised
Like you, I'm training for Boston (my first one); I've run 22 past weekend and I'll do 20 or 21 this one. I've followed this routine for my previos marathon (St George) with no problems, 3 weeks are enough to make your legs fresh with a good taper. In my opinion, you need to keep reminding your body how to run long until the very last possible time (this is 3 weeks out for me, I've tried 2 and it was a disaster). Also, you need to remind your mind how it's going to be, and 4 weeks are a pretty long time....
