A guy in my office said that Galen Rupp could beat me in the 400 and I don't think he has any clue what kind of time that kid can actually run in the 400. I ran 49.98 FAT this season. Basically, the question is, could Rupp break 50 in the open 400?

hell no
actually, yes
thats a strong time for a 400, being able to break 50 is a big benchmark to whether you are fast. But Galen can break 50 seconds also. You would have to see him run an 800 to tell, since there is no use in him running a competitive 400. Most 4:00 milers and better can break 50 seconds in the 400. Maybe not by much, but it is necessary "most" of the time in order to be able to do it. Find someone on the UO team to tell you, and I'll bet they will know what he can actually run. I shouldnt say for sure, because I do not know as a fact if he can or not. Just comparing his other distance times to those who have broken 50. If you find out, let us know.
You can beat Rupp in a 400. You can go 49 mid or low on a relay split. His training isn't specific for the 400, I bet he couldn't split under 50. He can run a credible mile, but it's much more strength based than someone like Webb.
durham is the ghetto!
can he beat me in an 800?
i go 1:50
Can he beat me in a 100? I go 11.4. I'm a miler-XC runner, though.
11.19 here
49.98 is not really that impressive unless you are a frosh in HS.
Allyson Felix can run faster.
Rupp has a mile PR of 4:01. Most guys in that mile range can run 400 in 50-52, and given that Rupp is very strong on the endurance side, I'll bet that he doesn't quite break 50; Otherwise his mile time would be faster.
Now, if the guy in your office thinks 49.9 makes you, uh,... "slow," you might ask him to come to the track and run one--should be good for a few laughs.

As usual on LetsRun, I'd love to be not that impressive!

Really, Allyson Felix can run faster? Well smart guy, why don't you show me a link to the result where Allyson Felix ran faster than 49.98 in the open 400? I'd like to see it.
I never said that 49.98 was impressive, did I? I just said that that's what I ran this season and my coworker thinks Galen Rupp could go faster.

I'd bet $20,000 that this guy couldn't break 70.
rupp gets no girls
