This is a strange and surprising back and forth to have on this topic. My only guess is that maybe we're talking about two different groups of people?
Surely, my assertion that a large fraction of the 70-something million who voted for him have above-average intelligence couldn't be in question, could it? Or, flipped the other way, you're not saying that just about all of that group has well below average intelligence, right?
The other possibility is that you're only talking about his core group of mouth-breathers, a good sampling of which showed up on 6 Jan? I would agree that that slice could likely be much less intelligent than the voted-for-him average. Still though, I can EASILY imagine that tons of people in that mob are quite intelligent and/or have lived quite decent and successful lives.
Pulling back, here's another way to look at it: There are fundamentally 2 groups of Trump supporters:
1) Those ACTUALLY too dumb to see him for what he is. As many dumb f**** as there are out there (I recently passed half a century wandering around here, so please don't tell me I don't know), I still don't think that this explains MOST of the total Trump group.
2) Those smart enough to see what he is, but STILL prefer him for a host of reasons, with the main one probably being an intense dislike for most or all things "liberal." This group includes just about every R politician and official in this country, and tens of millions of reasonably intelligent and/or reasonably well-educated voters.
And I will admit that featured prominently in this latter group is a flavor of stupidity that causes one to improperly weigh the importance of issues - e.g., transgender bathrooms vs. honesty, or marginal differences [maybe!] in illegal immigration versus democracy, or PC/woke crap versus intentionally flubbing a pandemic, etc., etc.
And while this form of stupidity drives me crazy, I still think that it falls more in a "blind spot stupidity" category (populated by LOTS of smart and/or well-educated people), rather than something found ONLY in the truly, uniformly, REALLY dumb group of folks you're talking about.
Lastly, where I think that I will fully agree with you regards rural America. The Trump era sure seems to show that the intellectual disrespect given to the average hayseed in your average rural town or field was......way more deserved than we might have hoped. Red county, dumb f*** county.....ROUGHLY speaking.
