Their middling basketball team will keep playing.
Not advocating traveling as groups right now, but anything other than $ (or perceived importance) why basketball would continue and indoor track & field is a goner for UTEP?

How much revenue will the basketball team bring in to the university compared to the indoor track season?
Don't be so hard of the collegiate athletic program's decisions.
Be thankful you are still in school learning, which is what it really all about.
Some programs are shutting down completely. Clemson's men's team shut down permanently. Maybe you should contact someone in that program and get their advice.
My school is similar. We've been told it's mostly a numbers game with testing. Basketball has only a few athletes and our men and women's team combined is almost 70 athletes. We were told our COVID tests are about $125 each, so testing 72 hours prior to each competition would be prohibitively expensive and we are supposedly guaranteed an outdoor season, so it's not like we have nothing this school year. Could be worse, I guess.
Time to separate all sports from universities and schools. Go to school to learn, form your own clubs to compete at sports. The ones that don't make money will have to pay their own way. The pampered football players can go the NFL if they want.
Olympic sports have been riding the coattails of football and basketball programs for decades. Time to get weaned from the teat.
Last night the Univ of MD AD was on a local sports show of course talking about basketball and football team. A group of us started calling in to the call in line and kept asking what he thought about the (any team that was not allowed to play) team this year. The first couple of times he answered that right now there are no other teams beside basketball playing. The next couple people asked about why you are not any other sports. After the third call the show stopped taking phone calls.

This is flat out untrue. There was a study a few years ago that showed the vast majority of football and basketball programs lost money every year. There were a select few (maybe 20, IIRC) Power 5 programs that were profitable. The rest were not...

I guarantee you the UTEP men's basketball and football programs have been in the red for the vast majority of years for decades. That C-USA TV deal probably just gets them upgraded from economy to business class when flying to road games, at best. The Sun Bowl never hits even half capacity for home games and I don't think they've been in the field for the NCAA Tourney more than once since Haskins retired.

Basketball players to the NFL?
They’ll never get rid of big money college sports. The cries of racism and privilege would be too much.
