Hello LetsRun,
Around 7 weeks ago I posted a question “How should a 17 year old base train for a competition 6 months away."
I got some really great feedback and have been sticking to my plan diligently and have built up from 19 to 27 miles per week. I have mainly been doing easy (7-9 minute per mile) paced runs. I am wondering if it would be beneficial to add in one tempo run and one aerobic interval session to this plan. Would this allow me to continue with the same schedule (easy runs + 1 LR + 1 AI + 1 Tempo) as long as I need until a competition (the base plan could continue forever with linear improvement, for many months or years).
Essentially, I am fearful that I will loose my speed and just get good at running long distances, when my goal is the 5k. I want my schedule to allow me to train for any period of time until need to peak for competition, without the need for 12-24 week training cycles.
Would this schedule work for any amount of time (with increasing milage):
M: 3 tempo + strength
Tu: 6 easy
Wed: 3 Aerobic intervals on grass + Strength
Thu: 6 easy
Fri: 8 LR
Sat: Easy 3 + strength
Sunday: OFF (eventually this day would be an easy day)
My current plan looks exactly like this, just the intervals and tempos are easy days.
Please don't hesitate to give feedback on any aspect of my training plan!
