Raced him in his days at Georgetown - never thought he’d get as good as he did, which makes me respect Jerry’s training more. Anyway, as you said, the news isn’t surprising.
From a pro standard, his career was very ight
Whose career would you rather have? Merber's or Bumbalough's? I'm leaning Merger due to impact on and popularity within the sport.
Is he that nobody who outkicked Rupp to "win" a semifinal and then got his doors blown off in the final a few years ago?

He was hurt much of the time in college. Look at his HS credentials - he ran 8:46 as a junior. Guy was a STUD
Merber definitely
Based on his times in shorter distances, he has the potential to break 2:10 in the Marathon.

When I saw Bumby in high school at Foot Locker South, I said, "man, that's what an Olympic talent looks like"... beautiful runner.
easily merber a few american and world relay records plus much more popularity
Nike dumped him? Or at least came with a ridiculously lowball offer to re-sign?
I fear that the next Jerry guy to go might be Chris Derrick. That will be a sad day for me when it happens. First Teg and Solinsky. When Chris and Jager retire, that era is passed.

Bumbalough for sure. Dude was consistent, professional and low-key for 15 years at the top of the sport with legit PRs and true range. He wasn't a world beater, but he stayed competitive and in the scene for more than the usual two olympic trials cycle that guys have. I would say his PR's are on par with Goucher's, who ten years ago would be a titan of USA distance.

In 2013 alone, he had a very strong season with solid PR's:
3:56i, 7:40i and 8:12y in Feb (PRs)
13:23i in March (PR)
27:56 in April (PR)
13:12 (PR) in July
7:40 twice in Sept
Merber deserves props for his DMR WR participation, but only broke 3:36 three times in his career while really only racing 1500/mile. He put himself out there as a voice of the sport, but I see him as a younger Will Leer with a stronger social media savvy.
800 Metres 1:47.23
1500 Metres 3:34.54
One Mile 3:54.57
3000 Metres 7:52.95
I agree with taking Bumbalough’s career, but I think Will Leer’s career was clearly stronger than Merber’s.

This is what I most remember him by.
Strictly on results/times, probably Bumby. The dude put together a ton of quality performances at us championships & high level meets. I'd also want his 5th place at Boston.
Kyle absolutely did more in terms of reach. Not many people will be able to catch him in terms of impact over the next several years.

Merber was great for the sport. One time some friends and I added him to our group chat on Facebook and he actually chatted with us and answered our running and non-running questions. My favorite was when someone in the group chat asked him what he thought the greatest invention in human history is, and with no hesitation he immediately answered Netflix.
I am surprised that her retired. I thought that he was getting faster in the marathon. He was one of my favorite runners.
Jerry is the best Coach in the country. If it can’t work with Jerry then an athlete needs to retire.
