I ran the 400/800 in college and had PRs of 55" / 2:10. No regrets about those times (I think that they were pretty close to my potential), but I now wished I gave the 1500 / mile a shot when I was in that shape so that I could break 4:30 / 5:00.
That was back in 2014, and I've been training like a hobby jogger ever since. 10-15 MPW, with a few strides thrown in on occasion. The new year combined with the pandemic race cancellations reminded me not to take track meets for granted, so I'm thinking of competing unattached.
I found an open track last night, and holy crap, I'm slow. I got a 5:47 mile, rested for about an hour, and then gutted out a 66.4" 400. Yes, those were solo runs in trainers, but I haven't been that slow since middle school.
Does anyone know approximately how long it takes to get from hobby jogger shape to competitive mid-distance runner shape? Is a sub 4:30 1500 / sub 5 mile a realistic goal by the end of March? Also, can I jump right back in to higher mileage (30 MPW next week, 45 ish by the end of the month), or is that asking for injury?
