I used to love to watch his videos. How I rooted for his Olympic Trials qualification attempts. But gradually, I understood that his attempts to be all things to everyone in the running world was a slow-motion train wreck. And you know how hard it is to look away from a train wreck...
Today was the straw that broke the camel's back. What I want to know is, are there people that pay this guy to coach them? You've got to watch his latest video. Tells us he's going out for a 26.2 mile training run. Ok. About ten miles in, his calf seizes up on him. As the video progresses, he informs us that actually he's felt some discomfort in it on his last 23 mile run which he did only a few weeks after returning to training after a long break. Strike one.
So, he's in pain and he informs us he's going to turn around and run back to his car...TEN MILES! Strike two.
A mile later the calf seizes again. He's reduced to walking and a jog. He's in pain. He's doing damage. It occurs to him that maybe he should call a friend and get a ride. But he doesn't. YES SAGE! I want to scream through the screen, get off your feet you idiot! Get home. Not our hero. He continues, stoically and manages to get back to his car jogging ten miles after he incurs the injury. Strike three.
Sage is knowledgeable. He's accomplished more than most of us can dream of. And yet, he displays incredibly poor judgment. No doubt he will respond that he counsels his athletes in a more responsible manner. No doubt he does. But get that video down!
