Hard to disagree. Bob Dylan is also the most overrated musician of all time. Something can be good but still overrated.
I never understood why Nirvana is so beloved.
Dylan on the other hand I do not find yo be overrated.
I think most people would rate Nirvana as a not so technically great band that had a knack for writing some catchy grunge tunes. Seems appropriate.
Hmmm....
I was going to agree with you but then I remembered...
Maroon 5...most overrated band..it's just Adam!
Lol
No. The first chords alone of 'Smells like Teen Spirit' told us that there was a new era. Rock had been resuscitated from the grave. The great songs just go one after another in the band's short life.

To understand Nirvana's greatness, it helped to be a rock music fan at the time and see what an enormous influence they had. I agree it's probably more difficult in retrospect to appreciate them, but as they were happening in real time, they created a huge shift in popular music and culture.

I think Dylan is overrated. Most lists have him as the #1 or #2 guy. I think he is more like 4 or 5.
If you aren't really good it is impossible to overrated. Nirvana was really good. If you think they are the best band ever, they are overrated. Down around 20 or so? Probably underrated. And to some extent they were a more influential band than they were a great band as they didn't last very long.

I was not a big fan, but many teenage and college women had crushes on the lead singer, and in that business that is about all it takes to be successful.

In retrospect, what other grunge-era band is still considered "great?" If their influence didn't lead to any other works of significance, it's not very influential.

Name 10 better bands, if you can.
And Kurt Cobain is probably the most overrated musician, if not top 5. He wasn't that good of a musician, and by all accounts he was a complete garbage human being. I like some Nirvana songs, but I think they definitely lose their appeal after you get through your moody, teenage 'nobody understands me, I'm so deep' phase.
There was something rather clever about Nirvana.
Here we are now, entertain us
Not sure how anyone could think this when The Beatles exist. They're easily the most overrated band in history.
Elliott Smith is the most underrated musician
Virtuoso at guitar piano and songwriting. Could play drums bass harmonica and every instrument instrument on his albums
Nirvana was solid... Kurt was a really good songwriter, really good drummer, solid bass player. They paid their dues with a lot of touring and in the underground scene 4 years.
Overrated does not mean bad, but I agree. Let's just say that Nirvana were the poster boys of 1990s rock, but rock was essentially dead as a force in popular music by the end of that decade. Coincidence? When you are a symbol of rockism, the cult of authenticity, self-seriousness, no fun, and no experimentation, and these same things help to kill rock and roll, it does not play to your favor. Rock is still there residually and in legacy acts, but the kids went where the action was and rock was as rebellious even with or because of "grunge" as jazz had become.
Bob Dylan's string of albums in the 60s from the Freewheelin Bob Dylan to Nashville Skyline is pretty much unrivalled for any solo artist that i can think of. And for good measure add his mid 70s masterpieces Desire and Blood on the Tracks. Most likely the most influential songwriter of all time certainly if you polled other musicians. He is impossible to be overrated.

Totally agree. Vastly overrated. I do really like the Foo Fighters though.
listen to one Radiohead song, any Radiohead song... and then listen to either Smells Like Teen Spirit or All Apologies and you will know that there is no way your thesis is correct.
