I have personal responsibilities that require that the only time l have free to run is 6:15 to 7:30 am. The problem is l have responsibilities that get me to bed at sometimes 12:30 or 1am. I am able to go back to bed for another 4 hours at 8:45 am ,giving me 8 to 9 hours total of sleep. I only do this about 13 days out the month; typically 4 days at a time. Can l get by like this? I have no other choice. Typically out the 10 to 13 days a month, l have to follow this schedule. I don't have any other choice o to get my run in. For example, tonight l will go to bed at about 12:45 am, get up at 6:10am, run till about 7:30 or 7:45, then take care of what l have to till 8:30am, go back to sleep till 12 noon. Some days l can only go back to bed till 10am, but that is only 2 times a month.

Biphasic sleep used to be the norm in many cultures. You can probably do it for a while. The body however does not like when you sleep outside of its preferred circadian period. There is evidence that those who are sleep deprived still do not get quality (deep) sleep when sleeping outside of their natural time period.

Long story short, it depends on you - if it works, it works. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work for you.

Also just read a research article that found the benefits of exercise while sleep deprived were lessened compared to when not. It might be better to take days off to recharge on sleep and get more out of your runs when you can run without being sleep deprived.

I just had a kid, this looks a lot better than my schedule right now.

My humble opinion: I agree with post above when he says “if it works, it works. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”

Make quality miles with the limited time you have. Maybe accept that this period in your life may not be conducive to high mileage, and that’s ok. What are you training for- just staying in shape, marathon, 5k, sprints?

It is just enough that l can't take off the days because it is to many days( 1/2 the month). I have had this schedule all this week so far until, Sunday until Friday, now next week l get 8 hours no interruptions and likely through the holidays. It at least gets me in the routine of running hard before 6:30am, so l can run races because on days l don't have to l run at noon or later because l am not a morning person. I have been tired, but that is just because l just started running hard again.
