Tulsi Gabbard Introduces Bill to Ban Biological Men From Women’s Sports

I know an OBGYN. She told me that you would be shocked at the number of times the determination of biological sex at the time of birth is not clear.

Further, this bill, while well intentions are present to protect biologically female athletes from being eclipsed by trans women, effectively has the consequence of banning trans people from collegiate athletics. That is no better a situation than having trans women competing with biological women.

Trans women should be allowed to compete with biological women, but biological women should be given proper recognition for their achievements. If a trans woman wins a race, the first biological female should also be recognized as the winner. In tournament sports, biological women would be given a second chance after losing to a trans woman. And so on. We can all learn how to get through this tough issue without having to exclude anyone or having biological female athletes losing opportunities in championships, etc.

I usually agree with you Roy, but not on this one. A trans woman on the basketball team displaces a female entirely. One woman is now benched, and maybe another completely off the team due to roster limits. Your logic sort of works for individual sports, but really doesn't work at all for team ones. And if you recognize a trans woman as the winner, but then also say the first bio female is the winner, all you're doing is alienating the trans woman further by making a distinction with the awards. I really don't like to say this because I don't like excluding people, but I really haven't seen any way to make trans people in sports viable.

Racing against someone with gender biological advantages is not the way to run a competition.

We also did this for like 30 years and it had issues. I doubt that intrasex athletes are the issue here. .

Another problem with Roy's post is if you look at NCAA qualifying, only a certain number of athletes are allowed in the competition and receive per diem from the NCAA. That number has actually been cut this year due to the lack of funding received last spring without March Madness money. This will result in a field that will be reduced by approximately 25%. Any Trans athlete who would be allowed to compete in the women's field would fill one of those slots, thereby reducing the number of available spots for biologically female competitors.. They are also not going to recognize 3 champions; male, female, and those who identify as female. Rules are in place to allow for fair and equitable competition, and while I understand that trans people must be treated with respect and protected constitutionally, allowing competition in a female field does not allow for fair and equitable competition for all females.

Think of a tennis tournament or any one v one knockout competition. Every biological at birth woman who loses to a trans woman will never get the opportunity for a paycheck, medal etc... At least in a race someone could still claim to be the fastest biological at birth or whatever the correct term is.

One of the few sane democrats left. Wish more were like her instead. Even though I don't agree with her on a lot of issues, I would vote for her over the usual neocon/neoliberal democrat and Republican we usually get on the presidential ballot. Hopefully she can have a trump like effect on the Democrat party.

I appreciate your attempt to find a solution that's inclusive to both parties but this just doesn't make sense. If there are two separate winners within the race then why have them in the same race to begin with? If a trans runner beats a field of 10 other nontrans runners and we announce the first biolical female to be the female winner, then what did the trans runner even accomplish? The only effect would be that the biological winner now has to share the victory with the trans runner. Most proposed solutions at least favor one group or the other, yours seems to favor neither.

In this case, I disagree with you. By using biological sex at birth, you do not ban trans athletes. You only ban those born male from competing against women and those born female from competing against men (the latter is unnecessary). The hormone therapies would be the primary reason for banning trans men (people born female taking testosterone) from competing against college men.

Trans athletes could still compete against their biological sex, so long as they were not taking hormones illegal for competition. I think that it is necessary to do something to this effect, because if you don't the women's and girls's categories are going to be absolutely dominated by so-called trans women and girls, which is to say, biological males who retain a 12% advantage even with a year of hormone therapy, according to that study letsrun just cited.

We also need to remember this issue extends past running. In MMA you had a man who transitioned to female then was fighting women without telling them she was a man 2 years prior. The absurdity and danger of someone who went through puberty as a male fighting women shows how ridiculous a place this inability to follow reason has led us.

Most Democrats would be against Men playing Women's Sports, My guess is Wilson, FDR, Truman and JFK would ALL think the idea that Men can just say they Identify as Women and have that justify them competing against Women is absurd. I would bet that When people like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Julian Castro were in High School and were advocating for Boys to be allowed to play on the girls basketball team they were teased.
