I think it might have to do with cycling uses larger muscles and builds muscle mass more than running does. That requires more calories. And muscle burns calories long after a workout is over, so you need to fuel up relatively more than if you were running only.
I know this from personal experience. Every time i start biking more as cross-training, i get famished and i remain hungrier all day long. Same thing when i start weight lifting. And both are done in addition to my routine running.
When i don't do these forms of cross-training and only run, i get a lot lighter.
