So after alot of running over the summer and the xc season I lowered my 5k from 18:36 to 16:55 and then my mile from 5:27 to 4:58. Now I wanna train for outdoor track and I have about 20 weeks til then. Assuming I wanna start my base buildup about 10-12 weeks before the start of the season, what should I do for the next 8-10 weeks.
I know conventional training wisdom would say just start building up a base like from SOM after taking a week or two off, but I think some speedwork would help me alot more. Even though I just barely broke 5 in the mile, I don't know if I can break 2:20 for 800 meters, and I know I definetly can't run 2:15. I feel as though using these next 8=10 weeks(after 10 days to rest) to drop my 400/800/1000 times would help me significantly for the 800, mile and two mile during the spring season.
Any suggestions on how to do this? I have basically been thinking that if I keep my mileage at 30-40 and then do 2 breakdown or ladder workouts, then doing 1 longer interval/tempo workout a week would do it but I'm not entirely sure how this would help? Can i get my 800 time to 2:05-2:10 by doing this? Any advice on what I should do?
Thanks
