Did anyone else's family use Vicks vaporub when you were growing up? It was applied to the chest to help with coughing and congestion. Has there ever been a more lucrative snake oil sold? It's funny to think that people bought the stuff and thought it could sink in through the skin, muscles, rib cage, and into the lungs to have any kind of medicinal value, other than the menthol smell clearing the sinuses. Had completely forgotten about it til a friend mentioned it today.

More to it than just the sinus thing. My podiatrist recommends it for my runners feet which are often in pain. Vicks is an analgesic --- pain killer and yes it works for me.
It has eucalyptus in it (or at least it used to) which can help clear congestion.
I know some guys that use it for (ahem) help with arousal.
Dudes would rub it over their quads, hamds, calves, nose, neck and eat a little with sandwiches before a race. Seen it first hand!
Did anyone think it went through your skin?
My mom gave it to me, you put in on your chest and the fumes waft up into your nose, I thought that was the whole point. I still keep some and do that, sometimes slather some on the bottom of my nose to really get that stank up there
Use Vicks before every marathon, apply on upper chest and rub on feet. Clears the airways for me, i thought this was a common thing.
The smell clearing your sinuses is the point. It's got nothing to do with it going through your skin lol.

It states on the package to rub it on sore aching muscles. If podiatrists are saying to rub it on their feet as an analgesic then they're not doing it for the smell.
The thought of Vicks having any effect below the skin is funny.

It's good as an embrocation and you can ram it right up your nose to clear the sinuses.
Love that stuff. Still use it. Nothing can clear me out at night like the vicks. Ruins anything you wear to bed, but it is worth it.
I loved that stuff when I needed it.
