Drew didn’t run bad, but he honestly didn’t look good. I thought his form would smooth out over a couple years as a pro, but it’s still choppy. That being said, 7:44 isn’t a bad performance, and Luis is turning into a NCAA champ caliber runner. I won’t be surprised if Luis runs 7:36 this year and goes well under 4.
Collegian Luis Grijalva smokes Drew Hunter (7:42 to 7:44), Nick Young fails to break 8:00

When did 2 seconds in a 3k become smoking someone? Why does someone's good race have to be framed as putting down another run who also seems to have had a good race? Why is a small, non representative (look at their fans/views/merch) of the general running community, subset of LRCers so dang jealous of all things Tinman?
Why do people assume that people who criticize others have to be jealous?
If you actually read through this thread you wouldn't be able to ask this. The thread is titled like Drew got lapped in a 5k. He lost by 2 seconds. People seem overly excited about that versus optimism for the winner, & even Drew, who didn't exactly run a bad time. I'm not ready to write him off or overreact because of one result, especially in a year like this at a time of year when nobody is in peak fitness. You can be happy for the guy who beat him but, yes, when it comes to Tinman, they get a special brand of jealousy/hate/criticism on here for reasons unknown. We complain about lack of mainstream coverage in our sport & then go after one of the few groups giving us daily content.
These are anonymous message boards. I've learned to not expect too much but two runners ran pretty solid 3k's. This isn't a thread about that. That's why it's a problem, and why this place is oftentimes toxic. -
I think Ritzenhein's group would be a good fit for Hunter. Ritzenhein would not put up with this flippant, immature, namaste sh*t that seems to characterize the Tinman group and Klecker and Hunter would be good training partners with complementary strengths.

There should have been a headline a few weeks ago about Grijalva smoking Mantz too. Some of the Hunter naysayers must think Matz has not future either.

They keep pushing this narrative that these boards are just flooded with Hunter sycophants that praise his every run but the reality is quite the opposite. -
Did you watch the video? Grijalva is accelerating into the finish looking really strong. Hunter is waddling in, having been broken by Grijalva. It was clear domination, and you could see the defeated look in Hunter's eyes.
There was no way Hunter could have beaten him, no matter what tactic or strategy he used. -

Hahaha....dramatic much? -
I'm amazed at what Hunter *has* achieved. He does not seem to me to be built like the prototypical mid d elite. His stride looks odd because his build is different.

Any predictions for Luis and Drew for 5K? I'll go with 13:15 and 13:17 respectively.
-
Drew 13:18. Luis 13:21.

This is a nice result for everyone who raced.
I applaud these guys for being vulnerable and racing to bust some rust for “the track meet” on Dec. 5th.
Nico Young just off a lifetime best in November is good progress!! Freshman year of college is a challenging transition for everyone. Excited to see him develop.
Drew Hunter bounced back well from the Colorado all comers two mile attempt.
7:44 as prep for the upcoming 5k is fantastic. Just glad to see drew healthy and racing. He is a serious threat for the Olympic team.
Luis, man what a talent. He is the Dark horse to make the team in the 5k.
Hunter and Luis have a great shot to get the Olympic A standard.
As track fans we need to be grateful that we have a nice group of young athletes running this fast. The future is bright for American distance running. -
He is not American.

How has everyone just glossed over the fact that Nico Young ran 8.05 ish and was about 150m behind the winner?! The guy was supposedly in 13.30 shape earlier in the year, spends 4 months at altitude and runs 8.05 yet everyone is worried about Drew Hunter running 7.44 in a race he probably didn't taper in the slightest for - give the guy a break.

That was my point. Hunter looks to be a lifetime 13:10 guy, not a 12:55 guy. That will be a great time for an American even if not world class.
I respect it if trolling but is LRC really that far in the dumps that 13:10 for 5000 meters is not considered world class??? LOL -
13:10 is not world class. World class PR would be close to 13 flat.

My point still stands. Grant has only lost to Drew twice in his career, at the end of a very long season.
It was at the biggest meet of Grant's senior year track, and he had been undefeated, only to get outkicked in a fast time by an underclassman. Your statement doesn't hold water, but that's OK, at least we know how you *feel*, which is the most important thing, right?
FWIW, I like both athletes equally, although it is nice that we can follow Drew's training on a regular basis. -
I don't think that Drew Hunter has ever lost to Grant Fischer. Nor do I think that Grant Fischer has ever beaten Drew Hunter. However, Drew Hunter and Grant Fisher have beaten each other.
Grijalva and Hunter are close to the same age and Grijalva is better right now. I'm happy with where they both are at this time of year. The real question is how good they'll be when it counts. I hope they'll both be in the mid to high 7:30s. Sorry to see Young not in form yet. I thought that he was because he was doing a workout with Grijalva after they paced races. He'll get there.
