Had a brief conversation with Billy Mills Sunday night in Grants Pass, Ore., where he gave a presentation following a tribal pow-wow event earlier in the day.
Asked him about his training mileage in ’64, considering Lydiard’s evolving ideas were still relatively new to most of the world. Guess what. He says he averaged 25 miles a week in training and beefed that up to 35 miles a week only in the few months prior to Tokyo.
Says he spent more time mentally training himself to run hard, fast. Told how he was beaten soundly by Gammoudi earlier in the summer, and Gammoudi had encouraged him to work on his speed. He did, and it paid off in spades.
The crowd of less than 100 (Sunday night) nonetheless cheered and applauded wildly as we watched the old black and white footage of Mills’ inspirational stretch-run in Tokyo, as if we were seeing it live for the first time.
