Co-worker told me he ran 4:30 and 15 something for mile and 5k in highschool-but he's like 250 pounds

Nobody cares about this. You are not very bright. How can anyone know whether this is true? Gym class is not a place where official personal bests are run. A good runner can become obese however.

What gym class has students running official 5k's? If he meant a road 5k the result should be online at one of the event timing and scoring companies.

Ask him why he didn't take a college scholarship.

How Old is he? If he was racing before 2003 theres probably a chance that his results arent online. If he raced or was in high school in the past decade then hes lying if you cant find it online anywhere.

There was a state champion runner who ran 4:05 in high school and ten years later was about 300lbs, so these things are possible.

A parent of one of my kids friends has told me similarly fantastic stories. I just nod and play dumb. Its not a hill worth getting grazed on, much less dying on.

When somebody tells me the times they ran in high school, I just assume there is an 80% chance that they're lying. 60% for college.

I'm more curious why he would lie? Does he seem like he was a runner? Maybe he's trolling you?

He doesn't seem like the runner type. He told me that he ran a 4:30 mile in gym class. He also said that he didn't run track because his grades were bad. For XC i looked up the school but his name isn't there. He said people at his school ran in the 14s for 5k so he was never on varsity. However, on athletic.net it says the school record is like 15:48. He also didn't know what athletic.net was. Now that i think about it i feel like he is pulling my leg. But he got really defensive about it, he told me to "back up" because i kept asking him where he ran it and questioning him about it.

Not a runner confirmed. Why tf he need to get so defensive? If he ran those times, I bet he will be sharing some of the stuff that happened while he was training.

I knew of this guy who was a former state champion and he ran similar times. He too gained a lot of weight after high school and he eventually succumbed to illness. To borrow from the great Chuck Berry .......... It goes to show you never can tell.

I can vouch for some fat guys because I used to be one. But before I got fat I competed in D1 athletics with above average times. I'll tell you how it happened. When running over 110 miles per week I could take down an entire box of pasta per night then get up the next day to do it all over again. Once you stop running 1) Your body has been taught to store fat for energy but when you quit it doesnt get burned as expected 2) might have reduced thyroid problems that makes weight gain / weight loss irregular 3) You might have a leftover overeating problem.

Happens all the time. He is not necessarily lying as he may truly believe he run these times, but the mile was run as laps of the school courtyard and was more like 1200m and the 5K was actually a 4K. He also may not remember the times very accurately: non runners don't really care too much about exact times, maybe the mile was 5:30 and the 5K 17 minutes.

I have this memory that I have run a half-marathon for fun with friends, when I was not even training, and I clearly remember I run 1:20. It was a long time ago, so no online results, but now that I know how fast 1:20 is for a non-runner, I don't believe that my memory is correct.
