Depends on the course, but I'd say 9 out of 10 courses you just kick the damn thing off. Maybe stopping and tying the shoe only loses you 15 seconds, but totally f***s your rythym if you have any left, lets your legs freeze and lock up a bit that it may be very difficult getting them back up to pace for a while, and now you're way behind and could be in the middle of nowhere, which makes the original pace you were carrying probably much harder to muster. Everyone's different, but I can't imagine the loss of a shoe slowing you down enough to warrant the aforementioned unless you are running on sharp rocks or pavement. Forget the shoe son.
I was running my second meet of the year for cross country and my someone stepped on my heel from behind and clipped my shoe off. So now my shoe is halfway on my foot and halfway off. It was a very narrow section of the course. Actually the whole course was narrow. What is the right thing to do? I just kept running on it because it was still laced up and it wasn't loose enough to just slip it back on. It finnally got so loose that it slipped off and I finished the last 5K with one shoe on. Needless to say I lost major time and could have easily finished among the leaders (top 10) had this unfortunate incident not have occured. Any stories?
you should have just started wailing, that would have solved your problem.
Ditch the shoe and suck it up.
What else are you going to do, sit down and re-tie it??

You could do that. And take care to tie it properly. Then chase them guys down and outkick them.
Of course, if you're not Kenenisa Bekele...
Unless this course has some ungodly rough areas that would shred your feet, I'd say kick the shoe off and go...you'd probably go faster than running with the stupid thing half on.
sorry man, it thought you were some guy on my team giving me shit.
Haha, boy, did you have some issues with your teamates busting on you for the shoe fiasco? You really erupted. I say def. kick the shoe off, and for some reason if the other one will come easy, get rid of that one too. My freshman year, I had someone step on my heel at the start line, my foot popped right out, and I ran the whole 8k one shoed, got 2nd on the team with my 3rd fastest 8k for the season. Thankgod it had rained the night before and softened up the ground.
I'd say quickly put it back on. Just slip it on, it'd only take 15 seconds. You lose time and risk lasting injury by running with only one shoe.
sit down and cry....then everyone will come over and tell you it's not your fault we lost.....
Dana Miroballi vs Katrina Price 1987 Illinois HS XC State Championship in Peoria.
It was Dana's senior year and she was State Champion the last 3 years.
Katrina Price had a decent lead before they headed into the woods in the last 400-500 meters. When they came out of the wooded area, Dana had a huge lead over Katrina and won her unprecedented 4th consecutive state title.
The rumor is Katrina had a acorn stuck in her spikes and she stopped and took time to take the acorn out.
Later a bag full of acorns were found in the Wheeling boys van. But no one could prove that they sabotaged the race.
I had a problem with my spike when I was 15 in a county race. The shoe was sucked from my foot in a boggy (a stream) section of the course. Continued with a flappy sock which soon disappeared. Upon the second and last lap of the 6km course I saw my shoe had been fished out of the stream and placed on the bank. I proceeded to pick it up, place it on and stamp it in in one movement. One more thing.... it had snowed the night before. True story, and you thought you had problems!!!!!
was this at pier park?
ask the race promoters to "pause" the race untill you find your missing shoe....RUN ON!! its only a shoe
Yea, I was looking at pics and one of the Oregon guys disn't have a shoe on, pretty goofy looking.
