Hey guys, just to provide some background I am a male retired collegiate distance runner who hasn’t run seriously in 1.5 years. In college, I was on a decent D1 program and during my best seasons was one of the top distance runners on my team.
I kind of miss the competitive element of running but just don’t have the time or the motivation to be running the mileage necessary to get back into distance shape.
Recently, I decided to go to the track and run a 100m to see what I could do just for fun. My expectations were low as I am out of shape and I never considered myself to be “fast” and was expecting to run something around 13s as I haven’t trained in well over a year. Well, I go out there and run 11.2 in trainers with no warm up from a standing start. I thought for sure this was a mistake. I do it again and I run an 11.0. And a third time and run 11.2 again. I verified the track distance and markings and confirmed it was 100m. I understand that in the grand scheme of things that’s this is not fast by any stretch of the imagination but was really impressed in myself that I was able to do this without any training and not using spike etc.
Does this performance show any level of sprinting talent? Is this something I should put a little effort into just to see what I can do? Could I put a little effort and training in and potentially run a 100m somewhere in 10s range and maybe a 200m in the 21s range? Again, at this point of my life (23 y/o) I feel like getting back into something competitive could be rewarding and the training demands of distance runner no longer fit into my life or desires.
Thanks for any input!
