I’m a healthy 34 year old male (5’8”, 140lbs) who’s been running pretty consistently for the last 20 years. I’ve never had an injury that’s sidelined me for more than a couple weeks. Plantar fasciitis has been part of my life for the last 2 years, but I run through it no problem. I think I have pretty good form and running economy. My volume and intensity has picked up considerably in the last 4 years and I’m currently averaging ~50 mpw with weekly workouts and long runs.
A lot of old-timers tell me I should take it easy. Grandparents and older relatives (some of whom were runners themselves) warn of the long term detriments of distance running (bad knees, crippling arthritis, back & joint issues). Some of their anecdotes are just downright scary.
While I don’t doubt the risks are real, I feel the enjoyment I draw from running is well worth it.
So, what say you LRC? Am I destined for knee replacement and a spine the shape of a question-mark? Or are these old-folks just stuck 70s, unaware of the advancements in shoe tech, and general knowledge of the sport.
