I am at a bit of a crossroads in my running and interested to get some feedback on which road people would take. I am currently trying to decide if I should focus my energy and training on eventually getting a BQ in the Marathon or trying to break 17 in a 5k. Both are probably "stretch" goals and will take a few years to get to (if ever).
Here is my background:
30y/o male
Ran track/xc in high school and was fairly average. Actually PR'd post college at 23 in the 5k but then had a really bad achilles injury - really didn't do any serious running after that for about 6 years (15-20 mpw just to stay somewhat healthy). Fast forward to last year, got back into running and training for a marathon and ran my first marathon at age 30. Mostly just trained to finish - only did a handful of "workouts" (fartleks) and averaged about 30-35mpw
PR's:
400: 53 (HS)
800: 2:02 (HS)
1600: 4:46 (HS)
5k: 17:57 (23 y/o)
Marathon: 3:52:36 (30 y/o)
Part of me thinks I want to get back into the 5k racing because I am "younger" but, I am also a bit cautious about re-injuring myself by doing more fast stuff in preparation.
What do you guys think? Sub 17 for 5k or work towards BQ for Marathon? Or both?
