In my state (washington) cross country is goings straight into track. I'm more of a mile/800 guy so how should i adjust my xc training to prepare me for track. Will I have to make a tradeoff for my xc fitness?

The transition should be ok... just know you may not be crushing early season races... lots of other states go from xc to indoor and it works out.
we start indoor immediately after xc in new york. it works fine. i will have my top kids take a couple weeks off. they race well below their ability for a meet or two, and then the strong xc base pays off and they are back to a high level very, very quickly. almost too quickly. or maybe definitely too quickly!
