Hi,
I am a french runner currently studying mathematics at the undergraduate level at Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (France). I would like to spend a part of my student years in one of America's well known universities to open myself up to other ways of studying/researching in mathematics.
The only problem is that studying at American universities is extremely expensive. To what extent can I receive financial support from one of these universities if I perform well in my classes, and if I am a regional level runner ? (4:00 1500, 1:59 800)
What else can I do to receive help ?
Thanks a lot
Salut mon ami,
You’re in the same position that I was in back in 1980 when I went to a division 2 university in Pennsylvania, Mansfield University. PSAC Conference. My first semester I paid tuition but then after that because of my running I received a tuition waiver which meant that my studies were free. I just had to pay for my meals and accommodation which was a big deal for me. Because of your times I would encourage you to apply for a Division II and Division III universities.
My times were absolutely nothing special. 8:57, 15:12, 32:22, 51:20, 1:50.49, for 3000 (indoors), 5000 , 10,000, 10 miles (road), 20 miles (road). I also ran 14:42 for 3 miles (indoors) Mansfield school record for 3 miles indoors and this was achieved at the Bucknell university open meeting in February 1981.
Looking at your times I think you can get down to 155 for 800 and around 352 for 1500 which would be quite competitive in division two and division three. When you go to the university in the United States everything will be right there for you to improve and you enjoy your time there it’s a great opportunity and I hope you don’t miss it. There are many opportunities if one door closes another door will open up and I’m sure you’ll be successful in your bid.
Bonne chance mon ami et je suis certain que tu obtiendras ton désir de courir étudie aux États-Unis avec un bon plan et pas trop de dépenses.
