Nah, nowadays the sprinters don't even think about moving up and there's no distance guys that are fast enough to even make a f***ing dent in the 4.

Can the 400/800 m double be ever again done at a major championship?
nope, not a chance in hell
Mark Everett was the last guy that I know that was world class in both.
I would go so far as saying no one will even attempt it, much less be successful in it anytime soon. It would almost have to be an American athlete who could do the double successfully at a championship meet because of the historical dominance in the 400M but the US has been out of the 800M game for a while now. It would be impressive to see someone come along with 43.xx and 1:41 or 1:42 speed though.
Wariner looks like a guy that could do it

Damn straight! Jeremy spoke in class today!
It's possible a 400m hurdler would be better than the 400m runner of equal ability. The former takes more strength.
No male is going to do it for some time, since Warriner seems to be able to dominate the 400 until he gets the WR and he isn't interested. We seem to have a situation now where we have 200/400 types and 1500/3000 types (Komen, Webb, now El G and Lagat). I can't even think of an 800/1500 type except Rmazi and maybe Krumm if he's still interested.
There seems not to be as much interested in the 800 these days, and US runners doing it are largely 400-type people who aren't quite fast enough to compete in 400 (Khadevis, JJ).
The next person to do a 400/800 might be one of the Russian women.
I believe 1:39 will be run by a guy who moves up from 400m, and blows at 1500m. I believe 800m is more related to 400m than 1500m, despite the paucity of 400m/800m examples and abundance of 800m/1500m examples. 1500m domination will swing more towards "5000m" types in the future.

Add to this the fact that Wariner's coach stated over the summer that JW was a better 200 meter runner than Michael when they first came into the Baylor program. My guess is that Jeremy will go for the double... but it will be 200/400.
Michael Johnson said that Williamson had more endurance than Wariner. If his training partner is stronger, than Wariner is not a feasible 800m runner.
Case closed.
It ain't over till Milli Vanilli sings. MJ may have been a 1:40 man. Maybe not when he was a 19.32 man though. Who knows what Wariner might try in 6-8 years?

In that case, Maurice Greene may be a hurdler. Who knows what Greene may try in 6-8 years.
We're not talking about what's possible/impossible, but if Wariner shows characteristics of being a top 800m runner. Michael Johnson said he has less endurance than his 400m training partner, so the answer is no. It could change, but then so could anything.
Exactly, ttc! Case ain't closed! MJ entertained the 800m. Coe entertained 5k. Geb entertains 42.2k. If someone tells me that Wariner has absolutely no chance in hell of running a 1:42 800m with adjustments in training, I'll slap them.

True, Fred Sharpe comes to mind. 1:47.53 ran indoors winning, and 48.86 in the 400h, only ran 47.1 but clearly cuold have gone high 45 or low 46's but never ran the flat when it counted.
Obviously he's not good enough to even be a contender at a national meet, but this is the kind of guy you'd need except up a few notches.

Somebody should take Alberto Juantorena aside for some history lessons.
Also, Americans view the 400m as a pure sprint, with few exceptions, so that'll almost guarantee it won't be a Yank.

Recall Rudolf Harbig and Arthur Wint? Not Yanks, either.
Mal Whitfield was the only Yank who came close since WWII.

Tom Courtney must be a chump then. Only won two golds (800 and 4x400 1956) and three Nat Champs (2x 880 1x440)

Forgot about Courtney. Pity he didn't double in Melbourne. Then he might have stood a chance of winning double individual gold.
Thanks for the correction.
