achillies tendonitis any solutions besides: rest,ice,ultra sound, and etc??

There are like 10 great threads on this already, try searching the site for "achilles tendonitis." Other than that there's not much you can do. Hope yours heals faster than mine (10 weeks before I could resume light running).

Additionally, it is my belief that built up heels are a culprit in achilles injuries. So, when you are healthy, try training in something with a lower heel. Adidas Supernova Classic or Boston Classic or even some of the Asics racing flats have a low heel:toe ratio. I was having trouble while wearing some typical Nikes with cushy heels. I switched to Supernova Classics and the problem went away.

I've done the exact opposite and it has worked wonders. I run in the Supernova Classic and have had a sore Achilles for several weeks. I finally put in a 1/4 inch heel pad and had my first pain-free in two weeks last night.

I have not raced or been able to train since then.

I have to redshirt indoors and outdoors b/c of the problem. Be very careful and let it heal right or it will rupture and you will miss A HELL OF A LOT more time than otherwise.

As goofy runner said it may take a long time, its been about 12 weeks for me and it just started feeling better about 2 weeks ago. It seems 10 weeks might be a point to look at for time off.

try using an achiles brace......i know people that have had success in the past with them.

i think it works kind of tlike those knee bands. it puts a little pressure on the tendon to help it track better

I had an interesting achilles problem that few people ever mention but one i think is still worthwhile. I always used stability type shoes (usually the 2000 series from Asics or the Supernova Control series from Adidas) and I always had severe achilles problems. Nothing I did, even taking time off, seemed to help it heal properly. Well, long story short I went to a running store and had a stride analysis done (probably could've had a more professional test done by a podiatrist, but us college runners don't have much dough) and found out I was actually a slight underpronator, the opposite of what I had previously thought. The medial post in the stability shoes was forcing my foot to roll farther out that it needed to go, putting unnecessary strain on my achilles. This led to the tendinitis. I switched to the Brooks Hyperion and the Nike Pegasus and have had no problems since. Hope you have luck!

I echo that one guy's comment on the 1/4" heal plug. That will help take the strain off your achillies. After the pain goes away, take the plug out. The key to maintain the flexibility in that area.

I had an achilles injury 3 years ago that responded beautifully to regular, vigorous massage. Before heading out for a run, I would literally take a glob of Vaseline and "kneed" the bad achilles for 5 - 10 minutes with my thumb and forefinger. This would get the blood flowing through the tendon and loosen it up. I simply couldn't run without discomfort unless I did this pre-run ritual. My run would be virtually pain-free for around 60 minutes then just as I'd feel the soreness coming on I would STOP RUNNING. I did this everyday for about 3 weeks. Once the tenderness in my achilles subsided, I started doing toe raises on the stairs to strengthen it. Within a week I was feeling 100%.

To anyone with achilles problems I'd highly recommend massaging the tendon religiously. This not only promotes better circulation to the tendon, but also breaks up any scar tissue that may have formed.

Also, DON'T STRETCH A BAD ACHILLES!!!! LET IT HEAL FIRST!!!!
