Now I really wish Kenny still had the record.

Some of the greatest WR's in the sport were set not only with socks, but with ankle-high striped socks a la Adidas. For example Juantorena's record were a flash of knee-high striped glory.
Both the women's 800 and 400 were set in striped socks. John Ngugi won his epic front-ran olympic 5000 with striped socks on. Don't knock socks.
Not just any socks, compression socks. Got to get that extra 2% of power when going for a record.
Personally I alway wear socks with spikes when I have to wear them for more than 30 min. I feel like it's more hygienic than sweating directly in the shoe and have smelly feet afterwards, and have to wash the shoe etc.
I wear socks in anything but the Steeplechase.
Most spike uppers are slight loose on my foot and the sock provides no wasted motion and a superior fit.

+1 and it reduces the chance of a blister or hot spot. No one wants to be halfway toward a PR or record and start having to worry about their feet.

+1 again to both comments.
I also find taller socks to be more aesthetically pleasing.
Grant Fisher comes to mind as someone who seems to always wear socks. I was always a Grant fan for, among other reasons, that we both have chunky thighs and wear nike crew socks.

"superior" is not a word one should use in reference to socks. Don't be so dramatic.
Try "adequate"

Compression socks? Why do people feel the need to make up lies?
In my 26 years of racing I have never worse flats or spikes without socks! Just not for me and o would get blisters so bad if I did and I like the extra cushioning! I even put them on in transition after a swim in the triathlon!

Why is this even a thread
because people like you respond....
If you're able to feel a blister halfway through a race you're not trying hard enough, or your spikes are definitely not fitting right (10k and under). My spikes constantly cut the tops of my feet but I never feel that until afterwards, while I do feel my socks no matter what.
yeah I agree tbh, your spikes should fit so that you don't need to wear socks and imo it looks and feels a little faster not wearing socks

It's all good until the blister or cut turns into a staph infection with cellulitis running up your calf.

I like the smell of my feet .
I don't wear socks whether it is with spikes. running flat or trainers.
