Bekele runs 12:31 without mechanical doping.
Great run by Cheptegei nevertheless.

Agreed. Its a huge mental boost to know that you havea perfectly paced light in the race and if you are ahead of it all you have to do is stay in front of it rather than run behind it and outkick it. Then the shoes.... In weather that definitely wouldn't have helped anyone else who ever went for a world record in a 3km+ event
I hate agreeing with you guys, but the boing boing shoes and that pace light are both huge advantages.
The weather was pretty bad for Cheptegei though. I don't disagree that there are advantages with the technology, but you need to take into account the weather as well.

Is don't disagreeing the same as agreeing?
No. boing boing shoes allowed on the track. The wavelight pacing helped. However, the temperature made it tougher. Bekele had perfect conditions.

No, it isn't.
Split comparison of all 4 sub 12:40 5ks in history
Daniel Komen (1997)- 12:39.74
2:32.7, 2:32.7, 2:31.9, 2:31.21, 2:31.21
5:05.4, 7:37.3, 10:08.53
Haile Gebrselassie (1998)- 12:39.36
2:34.8, 2:31.6, 2:32.9, 2:32.8, 2:27.3
5:06.4, 7:39.3, 10:12.1
Kenenisa Bekele (2004)- 12:37.35
2:33.24, 2:32.23, 2:31.87, 2:30.59, 2:29.42
5:05.47, 7:37.34, 10:07.93
Joshua Cheptegei (2020)- 12:35.36
2:31.87, 2:31.90, 2:31.37, 2:30.34, 2:29.90
5:03.77, 7:35.14, 10:05.46
I think Joshua's 4k split is also the fastest in history at 10:05.46
Lots of microdosing going on in 2020? And do we know how many seconds faster these new "Dragonfly" spikes are? (Not just here - I have my doubts about BTC as well). Hard to know what a record means these days.
Though Bekele was likely also juiced, so...undeniably a great run but its hard to put in context. Honestly this all is making me less of a track fan these days.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen pics of the pros racing in the dragon flys from back in early 2019 so they’ve been out for awhile so I don’t think they make as much of an impact as the vaporflys did with the marathon. I think the pace light had a lot to do with the world record. I always wondered how much faster someone could run if they literally just had a light to follow while they raced, I feel like everyone’s Prs would be a few seconds faster.
And apologies - this doesn't mean I'm 100% convinced this is an dirty performance, I hope it isn't! But it seems like there has been little out of competition testing in 2020, and smashing a WR always leads to speculation. Then again, it could be the shoes plus being a generational talent. Who knows.

LOL! Sure. Just like Trump has his virus under control. Cheptegei will almost surely take down the 10k record as well.
Amazing run! However, i don't see how a pace light isn't considered outside pacing. High schoolers get disqualified in events from teammates running and cheering inside the infield for a few yards. That is a lot less of an advantahe compared to a light.

yeah, it was a great run and he did it but I just don't see why something like that was allowed this year. A big variable in distance running is the pacing and this to a certain degree eliminates that variable.
dirty athlete, dirty shoes, dirty pace light. everything about this was a fraud
And Geb's is superior to Bekele's, and Komen's is superior to Geb's...
...and Cheptegai is the world record holder.

It is so sad and hilarious that track is literally getting too fast for the old fans to keep up

Eh...Geb’s and Komen era didn’t have a major difference in shoes when compared with Bekele.
To me shoes always improve Over time so have no issue to that but I feel pacing lights takes away a big variable other record holders had to deal with
Agreed. Bekele might have broken 12:40 in his prime with the shoes.....

Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
