He's in the top 1 percent (2-3% break 3 hours every year). Take that for what you want, but yes, if he's a braggart then I'm sure it gets annoying.
I've got an ex-friend who was slower than me but his incessant bragging about himself led me to distance myself to where I won't talk to him at all. To each their own in solving what's annoying to them.
it's interesting. ususally it is the guys in the 3:10-3:30 kind of range, trying to knock on the door of 3:00 who talk like they are great. the guys who run 2:40 are usually very aware of far away from being elite they really are.
I've never met anyone really that bragged about their running accomplishments. It's much rarer than other bragging in other sports, at least in my experience.
I do see 2:40 guys put up on a pedestal by local running groups. Basically a bunch of soccer mom's and dad's that get together and run a few times a week and basically spend most of their time worshiping the one guy in their social circle that is the fastest.
I think I know this guy. Does he live in the DFW area?
I take that back. There was one guy that crossed over from I think competitive mountain biking to trail running, and couldn't shut up about all his accomplishments in both sports and his ridiculously lofty goals of winning national championships. I just said, "Nice to meet you and walked away and started talking to someone else."
2:40 is legit. I can't think of any 2:40 or better runner I know (and I know many) who is overly brash or cocky about the mare. The distance is pretty damn humbling.

Unless someone is extremely talented, there is no way a person runs 6:06/mile for a marathon on little or no training. With that said a 2:40 Marathon is a very good time but it gets exponential below that and the effort and talent to drop to 2:30 in huge, and then it doubles to get to 2:20. I really think anything below 5:30/mile takes some God given talent along with the hard work.
I know 10+ people that are 2:40 or faster offhand, five that sub 2:25 and two who ran in the OTs. None of them are d-bags about but it’s SoCal so it’s not a big deal. Stop hanging out with him or be the other d-bag and let him know how many women can beat him at any given marathon.
Actually I ran under 2:40 for the 800 many times, even in workouts.

it's not as bad as starting. thread about this guy you know who ran a 2:40 and made you jealous because he's not even hardly training and suddenly your 2:29 doesn't feel that special.
Even a 2:12 guy that carries himself and presents himself as the best runner there is would get annoying. He wouldn’t be able to show up to a world major and compete more than a couple miles without throwing away his own race
Before I even thought of training for a marathon, I used to do interval sessions with this pretty gifted guy. He was always fat. Then he decided to get in shape and start running.
He still had some jiggle in his mid section, but his legs were lean and strong. Didn’t take him long. Ran 2:40 in his first Mary at Traverse City (I think). He had a great motor. Pumping out many reps of 400m repeats. Not terribly quick. His 5k-10k were modest.
When he hit 2:40 his first time out, I admired him. He busted his ass to get there. Very soft spoken. Never bragged. I don’t think he runs anymore. Went to med school and prob has a hot wife now. 2:40 is very fast and nothing to sneeze at.

I agree, quite odd. I can understand saying “Nice to meet you,” but why would he say “Nice to meet you and walked away and started talking to someone else.” I wonder what the 2:40 guy said in response.
