I am signed up for CIM (I registered in late April). I do not think it is going to happen this year in December. Therefore, it may be a good opportunity to lower my personal best times at 3k and 5k. For the chance that CIM does happen, how bad is it to do 3k/5k training instead of marathon training? For example, I am running about 90 miles a week now with a tempo/steady state, fartlek, and a long run (16-20 miles) every week. For 3k/5k training, I would probably run 70 miles a week with a tempo, interval day, and long run (12-16 miles) every week.
