This fall, I have the goal of breaking 16 minutes in the 5k as a junior in highschool cross country... my prs are as follows: 4:43 mile 10:00 2 mile (both time trials since spring was cancelled) 17:13 5k (ran this in a tempo run during winter base training on the track, was compromised during sophomore year XC due to a surgery during the 2019 summer) in order to achieve those prs, i ran about 60 miles a week over the winter with a down week of 40 every 5th week and one 3 mile tempo run at 5:35-5:50 pace as well as a moderately paced long run (6:30-6;50 usually about 13-15 miles) keeping that in mind as it did work for me, I spent June building up to 70 miles a week and am hovering around 65-70 (depending on how I’m feeling) for 4 weeks with a down week of 45-50 every 5th. This is done by mostly easy running with a tempo of about 5-6 miles on our Main XC course (have hit 6:13 pace on my most recent 5 mile tempo (went out conservative negative split the second half) on the course which has a ton of elevation and is not flat at all. I’m looking to work my way down to sub six for the tempos, but the last one I did saw extreme humidity with heat so I’ll see. For my second quality day of the week, I alternate a long (10-12 mile )fartlek with 10 sets of 2-3 minutes on 1-1:30 off with a moderately paced long run (15-16 miles) . So for example week 1 would have the fartlek with an easy long run and week two would have no fartlek but a faster long run and that rotation would repeat.... I plan to keep doing this until Mid September when school practices start then I will keep my mileage around 55 miles a week until championship season..... I know that was really long but does it seem doable? Do you guys think I can go sub 16 and more importantly do you have any advice? Should I increase the length of my tempos or any other adjustments etc. thanks, serious answers only I really appreciate the help.
