OK, I need some help with incorporating a speed element into our XC program. We are already doing 6-8 100m strides 2-3 times per week after our aerobic runs. What I'm talking about is true development of speed. I was extremely impressed with the Ethiopian girls' final 400m at the WC and either read or heard that they incorporate a "pure" speed element 2x per week of 10-15x 100m@ 400m speed or 10 x 60 at 100% velocity. What are your thoughts on this kind of training and how would you employ the training initially? Also, would you gradually increase the training load (i.e. going to 10 x 200 and eventually 10 x 300) or simply increase the speed of these reps? Look forward to your response.
