Brief background:
I'm not very talented, but I had a good winter and set a new 5k PR of 16:48 in February off of 70-75 mpw in singles, then didn't get to follow it up with any more races for obvious reasons. I decided in mid-April to take a 2.5 week break then slowly build back up. Now I've been running 80-85 mpw in singles the past few weeks. I've been doing all LSD (long slow distance training), so just easy runs, a medium long run, and a long run each week. I've been doing a solo time trial every 3 weeks to add some variety and hit 17:46 5k and 17:37 5k on the two time trials so far. Also, doubles aren't an option due to my job. And if it matters, I'm a 25 year old male.
Questions:
1) Since I'm adjusting to a new level of mileage and since there are no races for a while, is it a good idea to keep doing pure LSD for the rest of summer to get acclimated to the higher mileage and build a good base for the fall?
2) I've noticed that I get aches and pains, or even injuries, when I do the conventional 2 workouts a week and a weekly long run. I stay healthy with no aches and pains when I have less intensity, so either pure LSD or just 1 workout a week. Am I just fragile with intensity being the catalyst for injury? Or am I probably just imagining it, and should do 2 workouts a week anyways?
Thanks in advance for any serious and thoughtful responses.
