I know that HR can vary pretty wildly, but HR at VDOT easy pace is consistently around 80%, which seems too high.
When I was younger (early and mid 20s), I was doing about 16:30 5k, and I’d do easy runs right around 7:00 pace (sometimes al little faster or slower). HR was usually about 145 - 150 with a max of 182, or about 80 - 82%.
I took about ten years off, and I’m getting back into it at 35. I’m avoiding doing a 5k time trial until I have more miles in my legs (don’t want to get hurt), but mid-18 sounds reasonable based on some tempo runs. That equates to a 7:40-ish easy run on VDOT, so that’s what I’ve been doing (20 - 30 mpw for about six weeks; fewer miles the weeks before that while getting my legs back under me). HR still seems to hang out around that 80% mark, but everything still feels good.
Should I slow down and get HR down to 70% (ends up being 9:00 miles), which seems ridiculously slow, or should I keep going at the VDOT pace (adjusting up and down by day based on feel)?
