So the "medical authorities" in the US knew this very well but at first said masks do nothing. Then masks only protect others. Now it's masks protect others and may protect the wearer.
Why isn't everyone in the streets?
I didn't believe the CDC's public position right from the start. It made no sense. I also knew right away they were screwing things up by not doing early surveillance on the spread of the virus in January and February. To me, they were obviously blinding themselves by not acquiring and using already available test kits while the were blotching the rollout of the CDC test kit. They acted like they had an ego, not allowing the states to use other test kits in the interim before their own test kits were up and running. Also the restrictions on who could be tested, making it hard to get a test, was obviously putting a blindfold on themselves.
CDC director Redfield was appointed by Trump. From wikipedia: "He was nominated for the post by President Donald Trump, after the President's first appointee resigned in scandal. His nomination was considered controversial, and was opposed by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which cited Redfield's lack of experience administering a public health agency, his history of scientific misconduct, and his religious advocacy in response to a public health crisis."
Like I said, it was obvious that the CDC was compromised early on. I looked for technical information from a wide variety of other sources that weren't trying to hide things - experts in Asia, and US experts like Osterholm and Hotez, who aren't under the thumb of Trump.
I am a scientist/engineer and have a lot of training on working with hazardous things/using PPE, so the mask statements the CDC were obviously false to me from the start. (So masks protect doctors, but not you? Get out of here.)
