On this day in 1982, Steve Scott improved his American Record in the mile to a time of 3:48:53 in Oslo, Norway at the Bislett Games. It was a stacked field of some of the worlds greatest including David Moorecraft, John Walker, John Gregorio, and Matt Centrowitz Sr.

His previous standing record was a time of 3:49.68 set on July 11th, 1981. He set that mark when he finished third behind Steve Ovett of Britain and Jose Luis Gonzalez of Spain in last year's mile at the Bislett Games, bettering Jim Ryun's 1967 time of 3:51.1.
Next month on July 7th, same year of 1982, Steve would improve record to a time of 3:47.69 which is the longest held American Mile Record. So call this the middle ground American Mile Record for Steve Scott.
