The USA colleges/ NCAA program supports a semi pro league with more than 25,000 athletes on some kind of scholarship. (more females on athletics scholarship than males)

Many athletes from around the world take advantage of our scholarships.
No argument about foreign athletes taking advantage of USA scholarships $$ and training (especially in past decades).
Don't know what % of runners on scholarship are foreign but it ain't close to majority.
Every USA world champ or Oly medal is former NCAA athlete. Not true of other nations.
Wait, so we cannot find a way to make universal healthcare available in the US, but we have plenty of money to subsidize a bajillion track teams at every university and college?
We have universal healthcare. Walk into the ER today and you will be taken care of on the spot. Walk into an ER in a socialized country and you most likely will be sent home unless your injuries are life threatening. Try to stay on the scholarship topic now.

Among scholarship athletes, the percentage of foreigners is extremely high (not many foreigners coming to the USA as walk ons). The NCAA essentially serves as free Olympic development for a number of foreign nations. Hopefully travel restrictions and COVID fears limit the number of foreigners and force coaches to recruit and develop domestic talent.
Yeah, well remember that when you say NCAA, in terms of $$$ that translates into students and taxpayers footing that bill. Sports at universities should be, once and for all, intramural and/or club sports. Let the elite athletes develop on the dime of clubs, sponsors, coaches, etc., and not on the backs of the taxpayer.

True. There's always a huge amount of the top Olympic kids from foreign countries who choose to live and training here in the L.A. area. We have the best coaches and medical staff for Olympic athletes. We have the most Olympic medalists and professional athletes and Pro and NCAA sports championships in the world. The residual effect of NCAA sports has always been a boom for Los Angeles. Welcome to Los Angeles the Sports Capitol of the World.
It's a matter of what a society prioritizes. Those scholarships cost money. That money to pay for all of those scholarships ultimately comes at the cost of things that are much more important, like universal healthcare as an example. You know, that thing that EVERY other first-world country on the planet has implemented that we have not. NOT every other first-world nation spends a billion bucks on college T&F. The US needs to get its head out of its a$$ and meet the needs of The People first and foremost.

Yes foreign athletes on scholarship is high. I wouldn't travel to USA from....Kenya, or Slovakia and hope to get a ride. I would stay local and hope to get recruit call from overseas. That is what happens.
But clearly the majority of the scholarship money is doled out to USA student athletes.
No argument that USA colleges train a lot of foreign superstars however the trend in recent years is the best foreign athletes (Jamaica,Norway,France, UK,Germany) stay local and prosper, exception Kenya (and their medal tally has dropped over last few WC and OLY).

It's an EMERGENCY department. If you aren't experiencing an emergency you should go see a regular doctor (also paid for by the government where there is universal healthcare).

Have you ever been to a hospital in another country, especially one in a developed nation? What you say is total bullsh!t because it doesn’t happen. If you need emergency treatment, you will get it. AND you won’t be charged thousands for it because your insurance will pay for it. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not totally “free” (depending on the country). You still pay for insurance or a complementary plan in addition to what the government offers... the different is that it’s affordable and no one goes bankrupt just because they got hurt or sick.

In Norway it is paid as part of the incometax, but since the healthcare system is very efficient (no parasites stealing the folks money), the rate is low.
They do charge at the doctors, a full exam including labtests is 40 $.
Henrik I was part of the US college system for a short time, but he just hated it.

Good observation. We love our sports and the scholarships are funded from donations. For every one athletics scholarship, there are probably 10 academics scholarships also funded by donors. The same people who are demanding free education are complaining about athletic scholarships even though a large percentage go to minorities and low income people.
A huge waste of money since the Oly4 wins most of the medals. That's USC, UCLA, Stanford, and California.
How is it a waste of money to educate our minorities?

I was just using the examples of France and Germany, two countries I’ve lived in apart from the US. That’s great for Norway though!

The money does not come from taxpayers; it comes from donations and tv revenue (primarily football and basketball--especially the latter since that contract goes to the NCAA and then is doled out).
Also, a billion dollars when it comes to healthcare does not go very far.
