my goal for the end of the year is to break 2 in the 800m.
my training from mid January to late may was starting from 0 miles of running and gradually getting up to 20 miles a week. I ran tempo at low 6 high 5 minute pace from 10-20 minutes each week. other than that I would usually do one other workout either 200s, hills, and a couple times some 4s. i would also do two sessions each week of pure speed 60m sprints with full recovery and for about a couple months doing flying 100s with my best being 12.3
i ran three weeks of25 miles which was my highest mileage and did one long run of about an hour long with sections of it at tempo pace.
I think my focusing on pure speed and plyometrics and strength definitely helped me as last year with a considerable bigger base (average 40 miles per week for many months) i ran 2:05.92 and this season i ended with a time trial of 2:02.8. currently taking a month to do other sports and increase my static strength before i get back into regular running but doing some light aerobic activities to not totally lose fitness e.g. cycling.
it's worth noting that my aerobic condition this season was not great as i ran a 19:00 5k with great effort where as last year i ran 16:12. i guess my question is other than the obvious missing link of potentially more volume (30-35 mpw) what else could i add to my training regimen once i build a base again? Peter coe was really into circuit training. I feel like that definitely trains lactic acid tolerance in a way that only doing intervals would not entirely replicate.
