What should a freshmen boy and girl with zero running experience run for 5k in their first season? We'll assume they've done other sports but no real running.

could really be anywhere. it really just depends on the athlete. target mid 19's as a goal, but you could be much faster or slower

for a boy- i go to all boys school so I have no clue what average girls times are
Strangely worded. The average? A good time? 18 minutes for boy and 21 minutes for girl.
Breaking 20 as a freshman is a good goal for a new male runner.
Could be literally anything. 17-28 and 19.5-30+
If they're fit, thin, and reasonably athletic:
19-21.5
22.5-24.5
Is probably "typical". Faster than that would suggest some natural talent.
In 10th grade a freshman showed up, no experience. 5'2 100# maybe. Ran 17:30 first meet. It happens but not that often at most schools.
That is a terrible goal except for the very slowest. We make cuts starting sophomore year and 20 minute kids don't normally get to the 6 minute mile required.
Depends on the course. Running 20 minutes at one course can make you seem pretty solid and on some others you'll look a lot more mediocre.
It seriously depends on what you consider average.
Your average dedicated freshman will probably crack 20 minutes, showing promise of success by junior and senior year.
Your average "mom made me join the team" will be more like 22-24
Your average talented runner will probably be in the 17:30-19:00 range.
Your average "Letsrun.com is the only hobby I have" ran 15:34 freshman year only running 25 mpw, beat Galen Rupp at a few meets, and ended up going D1 and now qualifies for the olympic trials every year.
True average for a freshman, standard deviations applied, is probably like 20-23. No one goes "Wow they are slow." and no one goes "Wow they are fast!"
We had 20 freshmen on the team. They ran from 16:30-22 minutes so the average was probably about 19:15.

It is probably a bit different considering my team was "Anyone is welcome as long as they work"
But anything sub 20 seemed to put you in the top 1/4 of freshman races so I'd consider that the threshold for above average.
When I ran 19:27 freshman year I was the 4th fastest freshman out of 11 and 15th out of 39 on the team.
