I don't quite get all the noise re: Brown demoting their XC and Athelritcs team to "club status".
In the UK, Oxford and Cambridge have student-led (and student-led fundraising for) XC and Athletics clubs. Granted they are not quite as good as the top Ivies, but they are still pretty good for wholly student-led clubs. In 2018, the slowest runners in the Varsity 5km match across the two universities (i.e. the top 4 in each) was well under 14:30, and that's excluding other fast athletes doing the 800 and 1500. The top guys were low 14:00 to high 13:50s.
I think US programs overestimate the importance of University-led programs and underestimate the ability of motivated students to self-organize and still perform well. The amount of money US universities sink into sports like XC is unbelievable, and perhaps not for much gain on the margin. Maybe this is the beginning of something better?
