Did most high school runners ran in middle school?

yes.

So if someone didn't find out they liked running earlier, they are screwed?

Nope! I was a big fat middle linebacker until sophomore year, went from a 30 minute 5k to a 16 over the span of highschool.
no. most probably swim or play soccer or some other sport though those 2 seem to be more common
think on my HS team only like 2 of the top 10 guys came into HS thinking their main sport would be running. Everyone else was going to focus on swimming or soccer or basketball or baseball or even wrestling
definitely won't be behind
No. Talent always beats training. A talented runner could start at 14 or 20 or 25. It does not matter. Give them a year of training and they will be near their best.
If I hadn’t found out about running in 1st grade no way I’d be where I am right now at a sub 6 mile
David45 is almost as annoying as Greg. He is a low mileage guy looking for every excuse why he can't succeed. Most kids don't start running until hs. In fact where I grew up there was no middle school xc and middle school track was a joke for distance. The school teams didn't even leave the city to compete, the season was like 2 months long, and there weren't even meets on the weekends. There was an aau team that was a bit more serious though who had kids doing road races.
Running in ms gave kids a leg up and insured they wouldn't be back of the packers at the start of hs, but in way was a guarantee of success. I saw kids who started in middle school not even go on to run in college - either they were burned out or weren't ever that good and kids who started running as seniors in hs compete in college (d3). I even knew one girl who did a different sport entirely but walked on a d2 track team in middle distance during her frosh year of college.
Now the leg up middle school running provides could make the difference between walking on a team and being a club athlete/road racer for some, but at some point its about the training you do not how long you've been doing it. Your 20-30 miles a week is not enough to be successful david45 and this isn't because you didn't start running as a wee child, its because its not enough volume.

And how about kids who just did PE in middle school?
The fact is that I get injured from high mileage
I am thinking everyone is guessing or basing their answers off their limited experiences...
I didn't. Only one male distance runner on my team did. Of course, he's our number one.
No, you aren't injury prone.
You're just a whiny guy who can't handle soreness, in addition to not wearing proper running shoes, a terrible diet, and most likely poor form.
i didnt really. i went to track in 7th and 8th grade but in 8th grade only went to two practice and a meet per week bc i was on my hs' soccer team. i wish i did hs cross country as an 8th grader i wouldve been a boss
No, although those that did will tend (on average) to be among the better kids on the HS team. Not because they ran in MS, just because they realized earlier they had some level of talent. Parent was a runner maybe. Whatever.
You can start anytime. Talent is the primary factor in success, though hard work is rewarded in running for sure.

Shut up. I went from just doing PE to running 20 MPW in summer training. I was obviously going to get injured.

No, that’s extremely low mileage for even middle school runners. Might be sore the first two weeks, but should be easy after that.

Yet, I got a stress fracture. I literally got a MRI that confirmed a stress fracture.

That sucks if you have no talent

no you didnt. you're really suffering from lack of talent.
