Isn't it just a waste of energy? I've seen so many people front run only to get passed.

Otherwise everyone would still be at the starting line.
If I wasn't any good and was there I would have done it.
Next.
Let’s say I’m a 5000m man with 52 speed and runner B is a 5000m man with 48 speed, I gotta try and take the kick out of his legs
It’s like Snell’s first Olympic 800, he wasn’t the fastest in basic foot speed having the slowest 200, but at the last lap he was the strongest because the other guys speed got taken out

Did you know that Matt Centrowitz jr won a gold medal?
Watch his gold medal winning race and learn.

or David Rudisha....
gerry lindgren wouldnt think it's a waste of energy.
Because every race would just be a 100 metre sprint then.
Ask Centro how front running worked out.

Those people weren't going to win anyway. MORE people should try frontrunning.
It's amazing how many people with no chance tuck in as if they are miraculously going to be the big kicker.
Watch 2017 800m world championships, mcbride got passed
So if I'm slow, I should front run?

Or Jim Ryun.
Look at Charlie Grice at last years GB trials - with 3'30 to his name that season, everyone expects him to be going to the World Champs. Race is won in 3'48 and he finishes 4th, missing out on a place on the team.
Yep. You're not going to win a tactical race anyway. At worst you go out in a brief burst of glory.
I agree with the others: watching guys with no sprint giving away medals to the fast finishers is annoying. At least make them work for it!

Runners find it humiliating to be passed by 5 guys during the last 200.

If the race is not tactical and you're not the best in the field, then yes it is waste of energy to front run in the beginning. Most of the championship races are tactical in long distance events (sometimes in mid-distance) and at that state they are basically all jogging so energy loss is not a concern, rather the important thing is the positioning.
There is benefit of leading which will have less risk of getting boxed or getting physical contacts, so it really depends on the pace and runner's preference.
