When I think about the times in my life when I was in the best 800 meter shape I find something interesting. When I ran 800 meter races during those seasons I was totally used up right after. Other seasons when I was in more distance shape it didn't always feel that way. I now have a theory that middle distance training not only makes the body physically stronger and/or faster but it also pushes back some internal restriction that is in place for energy conservation (a good restriction perhaps for longer events but not when you need to burn it down for just a couple minutes or so). In layman's terms I can actually dig deeper when 800 trained. Conversely, I feel longer training, such as for a 10K or half marathon does the opposite and enforces the internal restriction. If this control mechanism is real I believe it to be mental and physical components working together but I can't say I really ever read about it. Does anyone else feel this way or have any thoughts on it?
