Busienei is best athlete of the meet
This time the amount of participants was much bigger than in the 22nd edition in Daegu, Korea, two years ago. In many running events there were only two rounds in Daegu, but three or four were needed in many cases in Izmir. The best individual athlete in these Games was Ugandan Wilson Busienei, who grabbed three gold medals winning all men’s long distance races.
The absence of heats in the 5000m made this possible for the 24-year-old, he won all three events within just five days. On Aug 16 he won the 10,000m in 28:27.57 seconds following this with the 5000m win in 13:38.51 on Aug 19. Already early next morning he took the half marathon title in 63 minutes 47 seconds – he is the national record holder in this distance with a 61:39 clocking earlier this season.
