Hi all,
Looking for a trail shoe with more cushion. I tried the Salomon Speedcross 5 but they were a disaster on me, way to unstable for my overpronation. Very narrow sole and higher stack than what I am used to.
Is the speedgoat 4 any more stable?

I've run in/trained in both. The SpeedGoat is much more stable and cushioned than the Speedcross.
If you are on dirt/rock/trail, the SpeedGoat is a great shoe. The gnarlier the better.
lol you think a shoe with maximal cushion is going to be more stable than a low to ground shoe? I mean give it a shot. For me the Speedgoat is mushy, bouncy and I feel like I have no control on technical descents. If thats the kind of stability you want, go for it.
Personally, I am loving the Salomon Sense Ride 3 for being a well cushioned shoe that can tackle any terrain and no issues with stability.
Thanks for the reply folks.
Uhh no, you have obvs ran in both speed goat and sense ride. I currently use the sense ride 2, but was thinking of something with more lug depth and grip hence the interest in SG4. From a grip perspective, how do they compare?
The Ride 3 vs 2 has slightly larger, deeper lugs and are plenty grippy. Not a ton better in really muddy conditions but do handle it better. I have a pair of Speedgoat 3's which i believe uses the same outsole as the 4 and I would say the Ride 3 is more grippy, both shoes about equal in mud, they both tend to hold onto a lot of mud as well.
Altra.
Some Altra's are a bit wider at the base than others. For more stability, the Timp has a wider platform than something like the Lone Peak. That said, I had the worst rolled ankle I've ever had in a pair of Timps so don't listen to me.
Pretty sure it would have happened in anything though, just the situation. Timp is a good stable shoe.

The Speedgoat 4 is considered a neutral shoe. If you don’t want a high stack height then Hoka is probably not the way to go.
You might want to check out the Long Sky, one of the few trail runners that is not considered a neutral shoe. The outsole should do well in most types of terrain.

I remember trying on a pair of speedcrosses and I took a few steps and started laughing. I felt like I was in high heels, I rolled my ankle in the store. I've never known a shoe was wrong for me so fast. I have wide feet, maybe I'm just used to stability...
I don't have anything helpful to add, sorry
So true! By the end of my first run with them I was literally landing on the upper? Sadly should have ran around the garden first, not a mucky trail, couldn't return them?
Pretty sold on the Sense ride 3 . . .
Its a great shoe! I have over 300 miles on my pair and just ordered another to start rotating in. Still has plenty of life left, a little bit of wear in the upper and outsole but should go for another 100-200 miles easy.
lower drop will give you more stability, that said speedgoat is a very high stack shoe.
why not try the Hoka Torrent 2, Kiger 6, Altra Superior, Sense 4 Pro
haha sounds like our feet might want a shoe called SpeedDuck instead of speedgoat
Sounds like you're a Hoka TenNine man.
I had a similar, constant ankle rolling experience with an old Salomon with higher heel offset (XA Harrier), a kind of race version of the Speedcross. I ended up giving it to a friend who didn't have the same problem in the shoe and even won a famous mountain race in them. In Salomons, the lower offset shoes like the S-Lab Sense don't have the problem.
I had the Speedgoat 2, which has essentially the same midsole as the 4, and it had normal stability. The sole is tall, but also wide enough to offset the height. Plus, the midsole wraps up around your foot like a bucket seat, so your foot is kind of in rather than on the midsole.

Have you run in the Torrent? They look like a good option for moderately technical trails, with less stack than other Hokas. Curious if others have any experience with them.
I have the first version. Probably my favorite Hoka I have tried but like all Hoka's the last doesn't fit my foot very well. I could never get my foot to feel very secure and even went down a full size to try to help with that. Ultimately gave up on them after 150 or so miles and now they just sit on a shelf.
With that said, they are very grippy (soft rubber that wears quickly but grips in every condition) light weight, stable, fast with plenty of cushion.

Yeah torrent 1 was a good shoe but the upper was a strange shape - not very foot-shaped - too straight, and was a magnet for absorbing water and stretching. Hopefully the version 2 fixed that.
Funny thing is IMHO the least cushioned Hoka shoe (the Torrent) has more more cushion than the most maximally cushioned Salomon Shoe (Sense Max).
